Astorga: "What if" Assault 22nd March 1810 - This hypothetical scenario assumes that Clausel's Division decided to launch a dawn assault straightaway without waiting for the arrival of the siege train. Despite having invested the Spanish town of Astorga on 21st March, the French were unable to make much progress until the arrival of a siege train on 15th April. However, by 21st April the siege guns had battered a broad breach in the north-west corner of the mediaeval walls and Junot sent in a 700 strong force to secure the breach at 7pm that evening. Although this force failed to break into the town, the Spanish commander surrendered the following morning, since ammunition was running low and there was no prospect of a relief force breaking the siege.
