Badajoz - The first British siege, May 1811. On the advice of his chief engineer, Col. Fletcher, Wellington decided on a three point attack against Badajoz - against the Picurina and Pardaleras forts on the south bank and against the almost impregnable San Cristobal fort on the north bank. Leaving Beresford in charge of the beseiging force with an antiquated Portuguese siege train, Wellington himself speedily returned north to fight the French at Fuentes do Onoro. This first siege would be abandoned when Beresford was obliged to link up with Spanish allied forces to confront a French relief army at Albuera.
