Reynier's Attack, Bussaco 27 September 1810 - Believing that he was only facing a British rearguard, Massena decided to send Reynier's corps up the ridge by the San Antonio track to outflank the British right. Once Reynier had reach the crest of the hill, Ney's corps would launch a direct attack up the main road to the village of Sula and the convent of Bussaco. However, unfortunately for the French, they were facing the entire Anglo-Portuguese army and, instead of outflanking the British position, would encounter the centre of the British line. In addition, the early morning mist, roughness of the terrain and harassment from British skirmishers would result in the French assault becoming confused and disrupted before it even reached the British main line.
