Campo Mayor 25th March 1811 - Despite capturing Campo Mayor on 21st March, the French decided to abandon the town on the approach of a British army of 18,000 under Beresford. Although the Anglo-Portuguese cavalry caught up with the retreating French, Beresford called off the pursuit after receiving a report that the entire 13th Light Dragoons had been taken prisoner. This ill-founded report allowed the French infantry and all but one of the French guns to retreat back to Badajoz. Had Beresford pressed home the attack with vigour, it is possible that a substantial portion of Latour-Maubourg's small force - or at least the artillery - might have been captured.
