Ciudad Rodrigo - The Assault of 18 January 1812. After a couple of breaches in the defensive walls had been made, a British assault was launched at 7pm, shortly after nightfall to prevent the French having time to make any repairs under cover of darkness. The main assault was to be delivered by the 3rd Division against the greater breach and by the Light Division against the smaller breach. In addition, some Portuguese troops were ordered to make two diversionary false attacks in the hope of distracting some of the French garrison.
