Olivenza: The French siege of January 1811 - Despite having few guns to defend the town and with the breach made during the earlier 1801 siege inadequately repaired, General Mendizabal unwisely placed some 2,400 men under Herck to defend Olivenza (or Olivença in Portuguese). Once Soult's siege guns had arrived, the old breach was quickly reopened and the Spanish promptly surrendered. However, the French would not hold Olivença for long, as an Anglo-Portuguese force under Cole forced the small French garrison to surrender on 15 April.
