Oporto: The French Assault, 29 March 1809 - Variant scenario using the alternative pdt and with the French having gun sections. After defeating the Portuguese at Chaves and Braga, the French army under Soult marched on Oporto. The Portuguese defenders had 197 guns and possibly as many as 30,000 troops, but most of these were poor quality militia and armed civilians rather than trained soldiers. Soult's plan was to launch two flanking attacks with Merle's and Delaborde's divisions, while Mermet's division remained concealed in the centre, waiting for the Portuguese to draw off troops from this sector to help defend against the other attacks.
