Pombal 11 March 1811 - Pombal was the first in a series of rearguard actions fought by Ney during Massena's retreat from Portugal, Ney deployed a division on the high ground above Pombal to cover the retreat of his other division. Perceiving that the enemy were falling back, Wellington sent Elder's Cacadores and two companies of 95th rifles to secure Pombal. However, Ney launched a fierce counter-attack before the rest of the Light Division could advance in support.
