San Pedro 11 March 1809 - Realizing that his outnumbered and ill-equipped militia would be unable to defend Chaves against Soult's 22,000 strong French army, the Portuguese general Silveira wisely withdrew with as many of his men that would obey orders to the San Pedro heights south of the town. Here he fought a brief rearguard action against Delaborde's division and Lahoussaye's dragoons, before beating a hasty retreating towards Villa Real.
