Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) led an 18,000 strong British expeditionary force to liberate Portugal from the French in August 1808. The French general, Junot, marched to intercept the British and prevent them from marching on Lisbon. After a minor action against Delaborde's division at Rolica, Wellesley continue to march southwards to the coast at Vimeiro where additional British reinforcements under Anstruther and Acland were due to arrive. Meanwhile, Junot had marched up from Lisbon and, linking forces with Delaborde at Torres Vedras, decided to attack the British before they could be reinforced.
There is no obvious point in which to attack and so it became a slow shooting-match. A number of British units were not even engaged.
