9 January 1814 - Historical - Intended for Head to Head play - Failing to stop Blücher at St. Dizier from marching southwest and uniting with Schwarzenberg near Bar-sur-Aube, Napoleon moved his forces south to attack him at Brienne, a place where he had spent part of his childhood in school. The weather was very damp and the rain made the roads very muddy. The French advanced in three columns on the town after Pahlen's cavalry performed a successful delaying action allowing Sacken to safely arrive from the northwest where he had been observing for signs of a French advance from that direction. The French attacked in three successive waves and the Allies were able to hold them off with much difficulty. Thinking that the battle was over due to night falling, Blucher took to the chateau for a light meal. It was not long after this that he heard confusion in the streets as the French had renewed the attack with the arrival of more of their forces and direct intervention by Napoleon. After almost being captured the Prussian general escaped to the south with his force. The victory for the French would be costly and many of the new recruits did not stand up to the rigors of combat prompting Napoleon to mention that he would have trapped the Allied forces if he had had his old troops. Visibility for Night turns has been set for 4 hexes due to the fact that the village caught fire and cast a glow around the surrounding terrain making ranged combat possible.
