#08H3. The Full Battle of Caldiero - Historical (HTH) - WDS Campaign Austerlitz

30 October 1805 - Historical - The Battle of Caldiero was a see-saw affair that saw both sides take and retake the village and the heights. The first day's action started with Verdier putting the 62nd Ligne across the Adige by boat and then drive on the Austrian left only to be repulsed by Grenzers and Grenadier's of Nordmann's division. Falling back on Duhesme's division they remained apart from their parent division for the rest of the day while Verdier countered a supposed threat to Verona. The Austrians under a cautious Charles waited for the fog to clear thereby allowing Duhesme's division to gain the village. Initial counterattacks by the Austrians drove the French back only to be replused by advancing French formations. By the end of the day neither side had gained their objectives and the battle was still hanging in the balance. A truce, which would expire at 1200 on the 31st, was called so that both sides could collect their wounded. The second day's actions saw Verdier bridge the Adige and bring across the rest of his division. Rather than attack towards the Austrian lines he chose to join on to the right of Duhesme's division and thus valuable time was lost. This day's French assault was on the Austrian left flank which after much contest was held. Charles withdrew from the battlefield and retreated further towards Carinthia and Austria. Both sides could claim victory. Massena had held against a larger force while Charles had kept Massena from turning his flank. The French pioneers will release at 9pm of the first day so they can repair the bridges. The rest of the French 2nd Division will release at 8am of the second day. Intended for Head to Head play.
