18 April 1808 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head or Solo as the Allied player vs. the AI (see RSW-Solo.pdf for Solo play victory levels) - After a day's rest after the actions near Pyhäjoki, the Russian army resumed their advance. The Swedish commander, Klingspor, was informed of a second Russian column advancing from the southeast, which could potentially cut them off. He ordered his three brigades to spread out on a wide frontage. The 1st Brigade would move over the ice of the coast to the island of Karlsö to cover the right flank while the 3rd Brigade would march to Siikajoki and continue marching to the north towards. This left the 2nd Brigade, at Hirvaskaari, 5km south of Siikajoki, to act as the rearguard and watch for the arrival of the Russian forces from Pyhäjoki. By early morning the Russians were advancing on their position and the Swedish commander, v.Döbeln, had the brigade make a stand so that the army could get across the river near Siikajoki. His troops fell back to Siikajoki and by 1 PM he took up a position along an old dry river bed. Here he was ordered to make a strong defense. Both sides started the action with an artillery exchange. A flanking attempt by the Grodno Hussars and Cossacks was noted and the Nyland Dragoons were dispatched to watch for the Russian cavalry. Realizing that the Russians could be defeated, Adlercreutz, the field commander of the division, ordered the 1st and 3rd Brigades to return to reinforce the 2nd Brigade. This action covers the first part of the battle where the 2nd Brigade is attempting to hold off the Russians before the rest of the Swedish forces can return to reinforce the action. Notes: 1. The Russians are low on ammunition and do not have a supply wagon. 2. The river bed, represented by the stream terrain, was dry but still presented an obstacle for movement. 3. Many of the units have been assigned Fatigue Points to account for the marching and fighting that had already happened during the day.
