1 September 1808 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head or Solo as the French player vs. the AI (see RSW-Solo.pdf for Solo play victory levels) - Following up with victories at Lappfjärd and Nummijärvi in August, Vegesack secured the area and moved further south along the coast. However, the loss at Karstula and the impending threat to the Swedish center caused the leaders to cancel all offensive plans. Due to troops having to be reshuffled, Vegesack's force would be tasked with guarding the army's right flank. Owing to a mixup in orders, Otter did not take up a key position at Kauhajoki thus leaving it open to the Russians. By taking the town the coast road could be outflanked. On September 1st, Ushakov occupied the town with his brigade thus cutting off Palmfelt's retreat route. The latter commander realized that only if he could suprise the Russians there could he escape. Von Otter would make a flanking attack to help Palmefelt take the town. Battle commentary: Palmfelt arrived from the west and attacked but the Russian artillery forced him back. The Russians then attacked and drove Palmfelt's inferior force back. Von Otten arrived too late to help but attacked anyway. His force was beaten back to the north. Palmfelt and his force, with the rest of the 2nd Brigade, would remain in the Lappfjärd area for several days after the battle. The brigade was divided and they were out of communication with their HQ in Lappo. The Russians had succeeded in dividing the Swedish army in the south.
