15 September 1808 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head or Solo as the Allied player vs. the AI (see RSW-Solo.pdf for Solo play victory levels) - Following the Battle of Oravais, the Swedish forces moved north to retake Gamla Karleby. Along the way they could hear the fighting going on in the vicinity of the town. On the 15th the Vanguard under Gripenberg approached Kronoby (to the south of Gamla Karleby) and there they found a force arriving from the north. Gripenberg adopted a defensive posture and deployed his men facing the bridge. The Russians had split their forces. One arrived from the north early on while another arrived from the east. The first force made an advance on the bridge, tried to set up their guns but were foiled in that regard, and a lively exchange of small arms fire followed. Once Gripenberg realized that he outnumbered the Russians he ordered an attack to take the bridge and clear the northern side of enemy troops. The Swedish advance met with no resistance, the Russian commander realizing he was outnumbered and wisely chose to fall back. A short pursuit followed and the Swedes soon returned to the town. Another hour passed and the second column arrived from the east quickly looking to attack the lone Swedish company stationed by a ford. Gripenberg dispatched some forces to assist the lone company and the Russian forces soon were in retreat. Gripenberg did not follow up on his success but instead rested on the news that the Russians had abandoned Gamla Karleby. DESIGN NOTE: The morale of the Swedish troops has been reduced to denote their low spirits after the Battle of Orvais. SPECIAL RULE: All Swedish forces release by 12:50 PM but the lone company at hex 47,35 may not move unless a Russian unit from the Russian Eastern Column is spotted.
