(HISTORICAL) The Second Day of the Battle of Corinth - Many Confederate generals and almost all of the soldiers in the ranks believed Corinth could and should have been taken on October 3rd. On the first day of battle, the Union forces were driven back into the town's inner defenses. At this crucial time, Price wished to halt his forces, reorganize, and resume the battle on the morrow. Van Dorn acquiesced. General Lovell put in a miserable performance on the 3rd. After flanking the Union left in the morning, his entire division (except the 1st Missouri) did next to nothing as Price's two divisions steadily pushed the Federals back. The plan of battle on the 4th called for Lovell to attack on the right facing College Hill while Maury assaulted Battery Robinett and Hebert's division (under Green) hit Rosecrans' right. Once again Lovell hesitated, doing next to nothing while Price's divisions were massacred in repeated frontal assaults. The fighting around Robinett was truly murder, punctuated with the heroic death of Colonel William P. Rogers of the 2nd Texas. Witnessing the failed attacks and the disordered rout of his men, Price exclaimed, "My God! My boys are running!..."
