Not content with awaiting the next enemy invasion of Tennessee, the Federal army under General Grant is advancing to Purdy along three roads. Once the Union divisions are united at that place, the combined army is to march to Corinth. At the same time, the Confederate army under Van Dorn is moving north from Corinth for an attack upon the Federal garrisons in West Tennessee. Both armies are on a collision path at the small town of Purdy, Tennessee.
