The advance of the Austrian V Corps brought them to the city of Landshut. Two bridges spanned the Isar River at that point and were essential to the success of the beginning of the campaign. Defending the west shore was the 3rd division of the Bavarian Corps. Commanded by the veteran Deroy, their mission was to delay the Hapsburgs as much as possible.
