14 October 1806 (Historical) A thick fog lay over the countryside as Gudin's division marched up into the Hassenhausen defile. A squadron of French cavalry had blundered into the Prussians and gave the alarm. Gudin deployed his division and the Battle of Auerstedt was underway. Davout would personally direct the deployments of the troops and push in new formations as they arrived. First, Friant and the Morand arrived to stem the tide of Prussians. The Prussians committed their formations with no coordination the result being that a smaller force decisively beat over twice its size. Can you as Davout repeat history, hold your ground and then advance to press the Prussians back or will you watch as your beloved corps gets beaten and driven back on Kosen? This scenario is best played human vs. human or as French vs. the AI. Initially several of the Prussian units near Auerstedt are disordered due to the traffic jam that occured in the town. Intended for head to head play.

To simulate confusion, the Prussians fix and unfix at times. This can be frustrating, but I suspect necessary to stop all the Prussian army overrunning the French. The French have advantages in leadership and quality and need to deploy defensively until they are at full strength. Trying to defend the small VP hexes is a waste of manpower. The Prussian power is in the cavalry.
The Prussians have several advantages. Numbers, and an exit hex to aim for which is not easily defended by the French. The French have quality on their side and the fact the Prussians keep fixing.
This is the second time Ive played the scenario, and the first from the Allied side. The random fixing and unfixing of major units through the second half of the battle really handicaps the Prussian forces. It doesnt seem to fully recreate the situation or the command dilemma that the historic commanders faced.
With the right approach very hard for the French
Scenario is well balanced, even if the Prussians have a huge numbers advantage. The French army was nearly totally destroyed when the French asked for terms with 7 turns left, but the French were still winning on points (which would soon change). Prussians must be mindful of their losses.
