023. First Castiglione Var.#1: Würmser's Attack - WDS Campaign Marengo

3 August 1796 - Variant - Intended to be played Head to Head - The historical action ended when the advance guard elements were repulsed from Castiglione and had fallen back on the main portion of the column as it advanced towards the town. What if Würmser had decided to launch an immediate attack? The action certainly would have drawn the notice of Bonaparte to the north and he would have sent troops marching to the sound of the guns. This late afternoon version of the action on the 3rd allows the players to explore the possibilities that the Austrians could have wrecked Augereau's division prior to Massena arriving to save the day. Rampon's brigade is left out of the scenario reflecting that it was needed to occupy key locations to the north and northwest. NOTE: Massena's division will not have any supply wagons due to the haste that the men would have had to march to the battlefield. Also note that certain units on both sides are reduced and have fatigue to reflect the earlier fighting.
