With the armies facing each other across Totopotomoy Creek, Lee looked again to take the initiative. Based on scouting reports, it appeared that the only Union infantry south of Totopotomoy Creek were the men of Warren's Fifth Corps. This isolated corps provided the opportunity Lee sought. He ordered the 2nd Corps, commanded by Gen. Early, to swing down to Old Church Road and attack Warren's left. Elements of Anderson's 1st Corps were to support the attack. If all went well, Warren would be dealt a severe blow and the Army of the Potomac's turning movement would be arrested. Early's attack began about 3 p.m. The results of the coming engagement led Major Blackford of Anderson's staff to say, "We are being conquered by the splendor of our victories."
