Haw's Shop, May 28th, 1864. Executing another "shift to the left", Grant's army left Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at the North Anna River and moved down the Pamunkey River looking for a crossing. Lee and his army moved to intercept. After several days of maneuver, the opposing armies lost contact with each other. On the night of the 27th, Lee ordered his cavalry to reconnoiter to the east from Atlee's Station in search of Meade's infantry. At the same time, Meade sent his cavalry south of the Pamunkey to find Lee's main body of troops. These cavalry forces found each other near the crossroads of Haw's Shop and a blistering fight ensued.
