May 27, 1864 -- Meade had ordered Gen. Torbert's cavalry to secure and hold crossings over the Pamunkey at Hanovertown. By 9 a.m., Torbert had bridged the river and began to advance to clear the roads and upstream fords. Meanwhile, lelements of Fitz Lee's rebel cavalry had moved downriver from Hanover Courthouse to scout the lower fords of the river to find the Yankees and hold the upper fords. They found each other just before noon.
