The cavalry action herein depicted on Catharpin Road seems like a side show to the big show, but it had an important impact on the Battle of the Wilderness. The Catharpin was the assigned route of Hancock's maneuver to turn the right flank of the Mine Run line. The road coming into Payte's Store from the west was the route of Longstreet's march to the battlefield. Loss of Union control of the Catharpin road opened the route for Longstreet, and also provided a route to the Union's left flank and rear. Confederate cavalry on the Catharpin would have blocked or at least delayed Hancock's march to Mine Run. This is the first scenario of the Cavalry Battles Campaign.
