As the Union army extended itself south of the Pamunkey River, Sheridan's cavalry had been tasked to cover the roads off the Union 5th Corps's left flank. On May 30th, Torbert's Union cavalry division was camped in and around the crossroads of Old Church with skirmishers posted out on the road to Old Cold Harbor. Around mid-morning on the 30th, Butler's Confederate cavalry left Mechanicsville on a probe to determine whether the Army of the Potomac was concentrating around the crossroads of Old Cold Harbor. In the early afternoon, Bulter's two thousand cavalrymen rode through Old Cold Harbor and ran into the Union pickets posted on the Barker farm south of Matadequin Creek. The reconnaissance quickly escalted into a sharp fight as both sides sent reinforcements into the fray.
