General Hancock's 2nd Union Corps had attacked the weary Confederates of A.P Hill's 3rd Corps at dawn on May 6th and overwhelmed them, driving them back to the Widow Tapp's Farm. Only the timely arrival of General Longsteet's 1st Corps prevented a total rout of the Army of Northern Virginia's right wing. With the situation stablized and the fighting becoming sporadic, Lee and Longstreet looked for a way to take the initiative. Using the heavy woods as cover, Longstreet sent four brigades eastward along an unfinished railroad grade to get around Hancock's left flank. Once in position, the Rebels surged forward, and with a wild rebel yell, they smashed into Hancock's unprotected flank.
