May 10th, 1864. With the intention of turning the Confederate left, Grant ordered Hancock to cross the Po River early in the morning and reconnoiter south and east towards the Block House Bridge. Lee countered this threat by sending Heth's Division to the west with orders to drive the Yankees back. Mahone's Division, guarding the Block House Bridge, was to cooperate with Heth. But before Heth was in position, Grant changed his mind and ordered Hancock to withdraw two of his three divisions from south of the Po so that they could join in an afternoon assault at Laurel Hill. As a result, only Barlow's First Division faced Heth when he attacked just after noon. Isolated south of the river, Barlow must either conduct a fighting withdrawal to the north side of the Po River or try to hold Heth at bay.
