After the Battle of Yellow Tavern, Sheridan rested his troopers until night and then started down the Brooke Turnpike towards Richmond. His advance was slowed, however, by storms and the Confederates' use of 'torpedoes'. Upon reaching Brook Church, Sheridan determined not to attempt an assault against the Richmond defenses and instead turned east along a military road that would take him cross the Chickahominy River and put him on the roads south where he could link up with General Butler. But Sheridan found his way to the east blocked by Confederate cavalry at Meadow Bridge and by the big guns of Richmond's defenses near the Mechanicsville Pike. To compound his predicament, Confederate General Gordon's troopers had closed on his line of march to prevent his doubling back. Sheridan was in a pickle. His command was penned in on all sides and it was imperative that he get across the river. The job of forcing a crossing at Meadow Bridge was given to Custer and his Wolverines.
