5 June 1864. Eighty years from tomorrow will be D-Day, 1944. To quote Scott Patchen, author of "The Battle of Piedmont" this battle "...served as the catalyst that upped the ante in the operations in the Shenandoah Valley and led to several months of constant campaigning in the Valley that did not end until the Battle of Cedar Creek, four months later." After Franz Sigel got whipped at New Market, Breckinridge's little Army of the Valley rushed to aid Lee. In the old days, such as when Jackson left the Valley to fight the Seven Days battles, there might have been time to strike and return to the Valley in time to coungter the next Yankee thrust, but times have changed. Grant sacked Sigel and brought in General David Hunter, who struck out for Staunton in no time. CS General William "Grumble" Jones pulled together another scratch force, conceding the rest of the Shenandoah to the enemy, and June 5 found him staunchly barring the way AT Piedmont as Hunter came on.
