Yesterday, May 4, 1864, The Union Army of the Potomac, reinforced by Burnside's independent Ninth Corps, left its winter camps and headed south. Lee sent Ewell's and A P Hill's corps east along the Orange Turnpike and the Plank Road to intercept the Union forces within the close, rugged terrain of the Wilderness. Noon, May 5: Ewell has dug in across the turnpike, and Hill is about to capture the strategic Plank-Brock road intersection, possession of which will split the Army of the Potomac in two. Realizing the danger, Meade has dispatched Getty's division of the Sixth Corps to secure the intersection, and sent word to Hancock to abandon his turning movement via Shady Grove Church and to join Getty at the intersection.
