This is a non-historic scenario. Surely, if Grant had spun his loop to the west rather than the east, there would have been a battle for control of Gordonsville. From here, rails led north, and would have been put in service to supply Grant's army. To the west was the Shenandoah Valley, so Gordonsville was key to keeping Lee's communications open with the "Confederacy's breadbasket." To the southeast, the Virginia Central wound its way to Louisa Courthouse, Hanover Junction, and ultimately to Richmond. With no historic battle to set precedent, Gordonsville will be a free-for-all, with a hundred ways to play it through. SITUATION: The armies have fought to a standstill in the Battle of the Rapidan. The southern flanks of the stalemated adversaries are seen on the northern sector of the map. Just as after the Wilderness, Grant pulls a corps (Fifth) from the left of his line and sends it on a night march to outflank Lee. The Sixth Corps follows. Lee responds by sending his First Corps to intercept the column. Ewell's Second Corps soon follows.

over time, both full armies reach the map. Rebs have excellent defensive positions in which to dig in. The size and layout of the map give the Rebs a better chance of not being outflanked and swamped than at Wilderness and Spottsylvania. All in all, an interesting encounter battle that lets both sides take the initiative and give both sides a chance to choose where to fight.
