By late June 1864, an early conclusion with a victorious outcome had been decisively denied the Union. It was now evident to Grant and Meade, that a siege would be required to secure victory. The first step to a successful siege, is to cut the supply lines coming to the besieged. Grant ordered that the various railroads supplying Petersburg, should be destroyed . To accomplish this goal, he ordered Union cavalry, commanded by James Wilson and August Kautz, to proceed to Reams Station and begin the destruction of the Weldon Railroad. To thwart this plan, and save the vital supplies entering Petersburg, General Lee sent his own cavalry and infantry, commanded by W.H.F. Lee and William Mahone to Reams Station. This scenario will simulate the battle to defend the railroad.
