W stands for Weather data is used) At 4:00 AM on April 6th, General Ord, commander of the Army of the James, sent a reconnaissance in force to scout the crossing of the Appomattox River at the High Bridge (the largest bridge in the world). Two infantry regiments, the 54th Penn and the 123rd Ohio, and about 80 cavalrymen from the 4th Mass, were tasked with the mission of burning the bridge, if possible. Defending, and patrolling this area were elements of Rosser's and Munford's cavalry. They soon learned of the Yankee reconnaissance and moved to intercept. This scenario will present you with the mission of either defending the bridge against a Union raiding force, or depriving its use as means to help the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia escape Grant's closing trap.
