WHAT IF- This scenario is a what if Gordon and Lee's hopes had been realized, and the Union infantry has not arrived. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia is almost entirely spent. Near to starvation, and exhaustion, these few remnants of what was once perhaps the finest army in all the world of the 1860's, must either win a miraculous victory, or finally succumb to defeat and final surrender. Lee has entrusted this final battle to the tactical command of John Gordon and his Confederate 2nd Corps. Opposing Gordon was Grant's master of cavalry, Phil Sheridan, and absent from this scenario is Charles Griffin, commanding the Army of the Potomac's 5th Corps. At this time, Gordon believed that only a screen of cavalry was keeping him pinned near the small town of Appomattox Court House. If he could break through before the Union infantry arrived, the Confederate army may yet escape destruction. This scenario will play like a race. The Confederates must attempt to exit as many units as possible to ensure victory. Otherwise, the margin between Victory and Defeat is very narrow. Note: Confederate exit hexes at 0,52 and 16,56.
