(Historical) On June 8th, a beautiful and sunny Sunday morning, Col. Carroll and his brigade was ordered by Gen Shields to occupy the town of Port Republic, and hold the bridge crossing the North River. The Confederates were expecting a quiet day of rest. But then, at about 9am, shots were heard as guns from a section of Battery L 1st Ohio artillery rained down shot on Port Republic. The time for Sunday worship was past, and battle soon to begin.
