(Historical) Believing that Early was abandoning the Valley, and returning to Richmond, Union General Wright withdrew a large number of troops from their pursuit of Early and started out to reinforce Grant at Petersburg. With only three Union divisions left in the Valley, Early concluded that he must attack, and force back the withdrawn Union troops. This attack took place near Kernstown, on the 24th of July, 1864.
