(Historical) Seeking a decisive battle, Union General Philip Sheridan, reacted quickly to the news that Early's Confederate army was dispersed and that there was now an opportunity to strike a blow at Winchester. A city that had previously been the site of two Confederate victories. Observing the Union movement, Early gathered his army and prepared to defend the city against Sheridan's larger Union army.
