May 17th ,1863 (Historical) Big Black River -- In the retreat from the Champion Hill battlefield, Loring's division becomes separated from the main army after a rear guard action. While Loring is moving to join Johnston's gathering army, Pemberton is under the mistaken belief that Loring's division is trailing the rest of the Army of Mississippi. He assigns Bowen's division and Vaughn's brigade to cover Big Black Bridge. Filing into the earthworks, Bowen's defenders await Loring's arrival. On the Union side, the Army of the Tennessee has already flanked the Confederate position by moving Sherman's XV Corps to the Bridgeport ferries to the north. Unfortunately for the Union, they were already burned. Meanwhile, John McClernand's XIII Corps attempts to seize the Smith's Crossing bridges, only to run headlong into Bowen's steady defenders. (note: the Rebel artillery cannot be moved as the horses were sent across the river)
