May 14, 1863 (Historical) Battle of Jackson -- The Union army conducts a two-pronged assault on the Mississippi state capital at Jackson. The city is defended by a Confederate division under General W.H.T. Walker. Realizing that holding the city against such odds was impossible, the southern strategy was a defense in depth, a fighting withdrawal that would allow the smaller Confederate force to escape the rapidly closing Federal trap.
