8 May 1809(H) - The Army of Inner Austrian had felt secure on the right bank of the Piave until Dessaix's Light Division obtained a lodgement accross the river from Priula. Eugene's plan to perform a turning action against the left of the Austrian line was in action as Dessaix fixed the attention of the Austrians on his position while the cavalry crossed further downstream at St. Nichiol. Behind them was Grenier's entire corps ready to perform the crucial flank attack. The problem was that the Piave was known to experience sudden flooding and if the fords were closed to further movement there was a possibility that the Allied advance guard would be trapped on the far side with the Austrians ready to destroy them! This portion of the battle features the morning attack by the advance guard and the flanking move and cavalry battle by Grouchy's troopers with the Austrian horsemen. (notes from Bill Peters) This one day version of the battle was designed by Mike Bowen who used the concept of bridges for fords and the new bridge damage rules which were added after the original Piave scenarios were developed. This version of the scenario must be considered what-if as the times of the flooding (bridges going down) will always be different.
