The Bristoe Campaign, Fight at Bristoe Station, October 14,1863 -- Outflanked and forced to retreat north, the Army of the Potomac had nearly reached safety when the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia interdicted the Union army's line of march and threatened to block the escape of the Union Second Corps. Gen. Henry Heth's division was leading the Confederate advance when he saw a chance to cut off and destroy a Union army corps. He quickly deployed two brigades and ordered them forward to seize the rail and road junction of Bristoe Station. Loss of the junction would put the Union Second Corps in a precarious position -- isolated from the army, outnumbered, and with no way forward. Heth began his attack around 2:30 in the afternoon but it quickly fell apart when the advancing Rebels were surprised by Union troops positioned behind the railroad embankment. This is the situation; can the Rebel commander capture the junction and win the campaign? Or can the Union commander stave off the Confederate attack and save the Second Corps from almost certain destruction?
