October 14, 1863. Mid-day -- Having been outflanked, Meade's army was withdrawing from central Virginia to towards Mannassas along the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. The bulk of the army had passed north during the morning but elements of the Union V Corps (under Gen. Sykes) were still in the area and the Union II Corps (under MG G.K. Warren) was still south of Bristoe Station and were in danger of being cut-off. By mid-day, Confederate Lt. Gen. A.P. Hill's III Corps was approaching Bristoe Station from the west and was being followed closely by the II Corps under Lt. Gen. R.S. Ewell. The scene was now set for a classic encounter engagement that is set to evolve in a way that neither commander could anticipate or control.
