Crusade: 1st Crusade
Scenario Briefing: By late April, all the major leaders of this First Crusade had left Constantinople and were on their way to their ultimate goal, the liberation of Jerusalem. Their first target, the walled city of Nicaea.
As a first target, this would not be an easy task. Nicaea was the capital city of the Sultan of Rum, Kilij Arslan. The city was surrounded by a wall nearly 4 kilometers in circumference, 10 meters high and 4 towered gates. And if that wasn't enough, over one hundred towers manned by fierce archers, and various machines to deter any would be attackers. Additionally, a ditch surrounded the outer walls ready to slow down the attackers where defenders can pick off their enemy as they approach.
Despite this, the Crusaders, unlike the pilgrims that came before them and were annihilated, were well trained in the art of war and felt themselves up to the task ahead.
The Crusader army numbered over 4,000 mounted knights, and 30,000-foot infantry. With them, was a contingent of Byzantine Imperial troops, numbering about 2,000 strong.
Facing the Crusader army, was a weakened Muslim force of under 4,000 city defenders. At first, the Sultan did not fear these new Crusaders as he believed them to be more of the same that had come before, and so he left the city with 10,000 mounted archers to deal with another threat to his domain further to the east by a Muslim rival.
But on May 14th, Kilij Arslan received word that his city, wife and treasury were under threat from, not untrained pilgrims, but a well trained professional army. With this knowledge, he immediately turned around and galloped to meet this formidable foe head on.
This scenario isolates the attempted relief of Nicaea by its Sultan, Kilij Arslan. Defending this section of the siege, was the contingent lead by Raymond IV of Toulon. With him was Bishop Adhemar. Together they formed up their battle lines with javelin skirmisher in front, archers, spearmen and knights a few feet behind. It would be they would feel the onslaught of the Sultan's 10,000 mounted archers. To help defend this critical area of the siege, two more leaders and their mounted knights rushed to aid Raymond. Godfrey of Bouillon and Robert II of Flanders.
Don't forget, in addition to the Seljuks approaching from the south, the city itself has troops it can send to attack the crusaders while their backs are turned. Remember this, if Kilij Arslan is successful, the city will be saved and the crusade will fail. It is this moment that will determine the fate of those fighting for their cause. Each fighting with the belief that God is on their side.
