Crusade: 1st Crusade

Scenario Briefing: Thus far, on their "crusade" to free Jerusalem, the Crusaders have captured Nicaea, and fought numerous large and small battles with the Muslim Turks of the Seljuk Empire. And while suffering many hardships, including the deaths of many men and horses, the Crusaders have reached a great prize, the walled city of Antioch. It was twice as large as Nicaea and far from a safe route for their desperately needed supplies. Without which they would all soon perish. The city was of great significance to all concerned. It had a population of about 40,000. Its high wall and towers were put in place by the Byzantines in the 10th century A.D. It could not be bypassed and so the Crusaders had no choice but to lay siege.

This scenario depicts the climactic battle that took place after the initial 9-month Crusader siege, and then followed by the 3-week counter siege led by Kerbogha, the atabeg of Mosul who brought 35,000 men with him. To counter this siege, the Crusaders numbered about 20,000 knights and foot soldiers. From the 7th of June to the morning of the 28th, the Crusaders were near to starvation and saw little hope. That was until just a few days earlier, a peasant soldier by the name of Peter Bartholomew announced he had had a vision. This vision proclaimed that the Holy Lance, the lance that had been used to pierce the side of Jesus, was buried in the church of St. Peter. Then, as it was proclaimed, a miracle happened. Peter found the lance as he had predicted. With the Holy Lance found, the morale of the entire army rose to new heights and at the Prince's Council, a plan to attack was conceived. Before daylight on the morning of the 28th, the entire army would march out of the city, cross the Bridge Gate bridge and attack. This would be no half measure, they would win or die in the attempt. Now, prepare for battle, the Sun has risen and death awaits those still sleeping.
