Date: December 22th, 1144 - Size: Medium- Location: City of Edessa
Crusade: Period between 1st and 2nd Crusade
Scenario Briefing: Variant - Edessa and what it would become known as, The County of Edessa, was the first of what would later become the Crusader States. And since it was the first to be formed it would also be the first to fall. In most of the battles you have fought to this point, it was the Crusaders that were the besiegers. However, we have now entered a new phase to this conflict. Now it will be the Crusaders who are besieged.
From the very beginning, Edessa was always going to be the most vulnerable of the Crusader strongholds. Afterall, it was the furthest from any reliable allies and closest to its most bitter enemy, the Seljuk Empire. At the time of the siege, Joscelin II, Count of Edessa, left the city with the greater part of his army to come to the aid of his ally, Kara Arslan, the Artuqid ruler of Diyarbakir. In performing this honorable act of an ally, his enemy, Imad al-Din Zengi, the atabeg of Mosul, Aleppo and Hama, took notice of Joscelin's absence and marched north to lay siege to the city of Edessa. Defending the city was a few thousand remaining garrison troops and three clerics as their leaders. None of whom had any great military experience. Edessa's hope was that it's strong walls and towers could hold out long enough for Joscelin to return and with him, more allies to drive off Zengi and his besieging army.
In this scenario, Count Joscelin II of Edessa has returned to drive off Zengi and relieve his capital city. Assisting him in this effort is the army of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Following the death of her husband, King Baldwin II, Queen Melisende responded to Count Joscelin's request and sent troops to help lift the siege of Edessa. She knew that if successful, Zengi would continue taking Christian controlled lands with the hopes of retaking Jerusalem itself.
Remember, only units that have a strength of 75 or less may use a siege tower to reach a wall hex.
