Scenario Briefing: Nearly two years have passed since the capture of Edessa by Imad al-Din Zengi in 1144. However, Zengi is now dead, and the time seemed right for Count Joscelin II (formerly of Edessa) to attempt the recovery of his capitol city. Joining and encouraging him were members of the Armenian Christian community and Baldwin of Marash. By late October, Joscelin was before the city walls and soon after in the city itself by way of sympathetic Edessan citizens lowering ropes from the walls. Once inside, Joscelin was able to open a nearby gate and his army poured in. These men managed to surprise the greater part of the Muslim garrison and many were killed as a result of this internal treachery. The survivors and Muslim citizens either tried to leave the city or made their way to the citadel. Once inside, they for the moment, felt themselves safe from the wrath of Joscelin. The Count, having no siege equipment, was unable to breach his way into the citadel and could only try to wait them out.

Upon hearing that Edessa was recaptured by Joscelin, Zengi's successor, Nur al-Din, assembled and army of about 10,000 and soon after reached Edessa. His army was well equipped with siege engines ready to turn the walls of Edessa into piles of rubble.

Note: Nur al-Din siege equipment included several trebuchets. This is the first confirmed use of this next generation siege engine.

As the leader of this Muslim army, your task will be to recapture Edessa and destroy the Crusaders within. No one should be allowed to survive.

Remember, only units that have a strength of 75 or less may use a siege tower to reach a wall hex.
