(Alternative 20 minute turns) After the defeat of Samuel Sturgis at Brice's Crossroads, in June 1864, a new expedition was outfitted under the command of Maj Gen A.J. Smith. Most of Smith's force was fresh from the Red River debacle, but they were hardened no-nonsense westerners who had saved the day at Pleasant Hill, and they were expected to accomplish the task of putting Bedford Forrest out of business. On the Confederate side, LtGen S D Lee, commanding the Department of Alabama, Mississippi & East Louisiana, leads an army of mostly cavalry and mounted infantry, with Forrest as a subordinate. Lee, not Forrest, would be calling the shots. After a couple weeks of maneuver, the adversaries met at Tupelo, or Harrisburg, Mississippi. This alternative version adds Lyon's Division to Forrest's forces and gives Smith's Union forces several additional reserve batteries. Reference: "Work for Giants" by Thomas E Parson
