0245 January 24, 1942. The Japanese had begun landing troops at Balikpapan to seize the important oil facilities on Borneo. Task Force 5 had been sent north to try and break up the landings. En route both cruisers of TF5 had to turn back due to problems. In this alternate version, both cruisers are present, including the Boise and her SG radar. A successful submarine attack had pulled many of the Japanese defenders away from the moored transports and cargo ships, allowing the 4 US destroyers to slip in among the moored invasion force. Drifting smoke from the burning refinery made spotting a challenge for both sides.
