0700 25 October 1944. Taffy 3, an escort carrier group watching the northern approaches to the Leyte landing beaches was taken by surprise by the powerful Japanese First Strike Force of Admiral Kurita. Slow and lightly armored, the carriers would be in trouble. All that stood between them and the guns of the best Japan had to offer were the 'Tin Cans' of the Destroyer Escort screen. Kurita would wreak havoc, but fearing a concentrated air attack, he pulled back before noon.
