0535 27 March 1943. As part of the Midway offensive, the Japanese had occupied Attu and Kiska at the far western tip of the Aleutians. In the ensuing months, the Japanese would maintain the supply line and the Americans would make largely ineffectual raids on the outposts. On 27 March, ships of the US North Pacific Force were looking to intercept the most recent Japanese reinforcement convoy. The Japanese were rendezvousing 180 nm west of Attu, 100 nm south of the Komandorski Islands before making the run into Attu. At 0530 US radar detected ships to the NW. Admiral McMorris would move to engage but would soon find himself outgunned and fighting to withdraw with his ships intact. See Komandorski Islands %2.bmp overlay.
